Community Based Schools

According to the California Department of Education, "Community schools can increase equitable student learning outcomes by addressing the conditions for teaching and learning. Community schools support the needs of the whole child by strengthening family and community foundations with approaches that sustain mental and behavioral health through healing-centered practices, social–emotional learning, and restorative justice".

With the $30 million the West Contra Costa Unified School District received from the State, the time is now to ensure our community schools receive all the support they need. I support community schools because they take a holistic approach to providing support for students. They address students' needs beyond academics. As a candidate for the County Board of Education, I am running to advocate for the County Office of Education to do its part in ensuring the success of our 22 community schools.

The Contra Costa County Office of Education offers many trainings and resources that could benefit WCCUSD community schools, such as trainings to increase student attendance, grants and professional development for early learning programs, programs to support students' mental health, and programs to close the educational gap of foster youth students.

As a county board member, I will advocate for sharing these resources with WCCUSD to ensure the success of our students and community schools.
